CCWHA Div. 2 Weekend Game Re-Cap

ADRIAN/LOYOLA- Friday night proved to be a real nail biter with Adrian College eventually walking away with the win in OT with a final score of 3-2. The game essentially cut in half in terms of scoring. Adrian came out of the gates flying with 2 goals from Grace Pavolich. One came just shy of 6 minutes in to the game and another half-way through the period with an assist from Jena Cruz. The 2nd period was a hard battle with not much to show for either side. By the end of the 2nd, the score remained 2-0 in favor of Adrian. The 3rd period appeared to be the awakening of the Loyola team when they fought their way back to score 2 goals within the last 5 minutes of the game to tie it all up. Loyola’s Michelle Cottrell was the sole scorer for her team with helpers from Maureen O’Brien and Reagan Lynn. With the score tied at the end of regulation, the game naturally went in to extra time. Unfortunately for Loyola, Adrian came out with a spark starting the OT and was able to end the extra time short after Pavolich completed her hattrick with an assist from Avery Huxter. This was a hard-fought game with a total of 19 penalties between the rivals.

Saturday’s match was another nail-bitter with slightly fewer penalties (13), but the same outcome as Adrian walked away with the win. The final score was 3-1. The game started out strong for Loyola when only 6:27 into the game, Maureen O’Brien opened up the scoring with a little help from Maddy Shea. The rest of the first period was full of chances for both teams, however nothing was made of them for either side. Penalties continued to plague the game. Period 2 was taken control of by Adrian with a goal 4 minutes in from Katelyn Howard and another a few minutes later from Jessica Abraham making the score 2-1 in favor of Adrian. Loyola continued fighting and creating opportunity for themselves without anything to show on the scoreboard. The 3rd period was a battle from the beginning. Adrian, however was the first and only team to find the back of the net during it. Mackenzi Heisner was given credit for the goal with assists from Elle Van Antwerp and Allyson Van Antwerp finalizing the score at 3-1. Although Adrian walked away with the win, Loyola out-shot the Bulldogs sizably, 37-23.
