AROUND THE LEAGUE – A recap of the CCWHA teams in action each weekend.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN/ADRIAN – The Wildcats faced off for the first time against the Bulldogs this season, with Adrian tallying both wins. In the 5-3 win for Adrian, Elizabeth Anderson began the scoring 13 minutes into play in the first. Summer Patterson and Cecilia Warner would record the assists. Erika Gilbert would make it 2-0 just two minutes later, unassisted. Veronica Hiley of Northern Michigan put in the first Wildcat goal with one minute remaining in the first period. Kendall Turro and Mary Schimmel with the assists on the Hiley goal. Less than a minute into the second period, Adrian increased their lead to 3-1 with a Maria Granger goal. Gilbert and Cristina Rotondo credited with the helpers on the third Bulldog goal. The Wildcats responded with a goal from Turro at 18:28 into the second, taking down the Adrian lead to one goal once again. Eve Feldman and Schimmel with the helpers on the Turro goal. Katie Hayward of Adrian made it a two goal lead again to start the third with passes from Hannah Chase and Mackenzi Heisner. Halfway through the third period, Hiley struck again for Northern putting the score to 4-3. Ellise Jeannequin and Anna Cockey recorded the assists for the Wildcats. However, Heisner would tally a goal for herself to make it a 5-3 final. Anderson and Emily Letke with the assists on the fifth Adrian goal. Sydney Higgins was in net for Northern making 31 saves on 36 shots faced, while Victoria Poland made 28 saves on 31 shots for Adrian.

Game two brought another back and forth game for the two CCWHA Division 2 teams. Turro would begin this scoring this time for Northern for the only goal of the period. Hayward would grab her second goal of the weekend 24 seconds into the second to tie the game. Chase would get second assist of the day on the tying goal in the second. At 7:27 in the second, Letke grabbed a goal for Adrian to take the lead, Chase with another assist. Alyssa Huiskens tied the game again to end the second period with help from Caitlin Muehlbacher. Adrian broke the tie two minutes into the third with a goal from Heisner for her third point of the weekend. Gilbert with the single assist on the go-ahead goal. Not long after the third Bulldog goal, Schimmel would put in Northern’s third goal, unassisted. Hayward grabbed another goal to put Adrian back in the lead at 10:43 in the third. Gilbert and Heisner with the assists on the second Hayward goal. Hiley grabbed her third goal of the weekend to tie the game, once again. Muehlbacher with her second assist of the game on the Northern goal at 19:22 in the third. Overtime was needed after the Wildcat tying goal, and Gilbert of Adrian would tally the game-winner two minutes into over time to end the game, 5-4. Higgins was in net once again for Northern, making 27 saves on 32 shots faced, and Poland was also between the pipes again for Adrian making 27 saves on 31 shots on net.

Third star of the weekend goes to NMU’s Higgins (58/68), second star belongs to AC’s Gilbert (2g, 3a), and first star is awarded to AC’s Poland (55/62).

 

NOTRE DAME/MICHIGAN STATE II – The Irish began their 2017-18 season on the road at Michigan State, and picked up two wins, 6-0 and 6-0. In the first shutout win, Caroline Riester was in net for Notre Dame and the Irish goals came from Colleen Dosch (1g), Erica Steigauf (4g), and Kiera Dwyer (1g). Katie Sylvester recorded two assists in the win. Danielle Williams was in net for Michigan State.

In game two, Riester was in net once again, picking up a second shutout win for the Irish. The six goals for ND came from Rosch (1g), Dwyer (3g), and Gretta Steigauf (2g, 1PPG). Tuesday Ford tallied two assists in game two. Williams was in net again for Michigan State.
