PREVIEW : UM-Flint v. Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS/FLINT, MI – The Saints of Aquinas and the Girls in Blue of Michigan-Flint embark on a split series, home and away, this Saturday November 19 at 5 pm and Sunday November 20 at 1 pm.


Aquinas currently has a 5-4-1 record for 2016-17, and a 4-0 record in CCWHA play which puts them at No. 2 in the standings for Division-2. The Saints have racked up 62 goals for in their 10 games and allowed just 44 goals against. Marlowe Pentecost leads the way for the Saints with 22 total points (16g, 6a). Isabelle Piotrowski has tallied 19 points (9g, 10a), while Kaitlyn Dailey has registered 14 points (6g, 8a) to make up the top three point leaders. Holly Ensley has been in net for Aquinas for a 3-3-0 record while earning one shutout and averaging 4.43 goals against per game. Ensley currently has a .879 save percentage. Caitlin Miller has also seen time between the pipes, picking up a 2-1-1 record so far with one shutout. Miller averages 3.79 goals against with a .850 save percentage.

The Saints’ last game was a league series against Loyola University-Chicago, with Aquinas sweeping the Ramblers, 9-2 and 12-2. Piotrowski (3g), Pentecost (1g, 1a) and Dailey (1g, 2a) all tallied points in the 9-2 win while Ensley grabbed the win making 20 saves on 22 shots faced. In the 12-2 win, the top three all tallied points once again, Piotrowski (3g, 3a), Pentecost (4g, 1a), and Dailey (2g, 2a). Miller recorded the win in net to complete the sweep after stopping 21 of 23 shots on goal.


Michigan-Flint is 0-4 in both ACHA and CCWHA play, putting in six goals for and allowing 26 goals against. Lauren Barella is the top point recorder with four (3g, 1a). Lillian Kuikahi (2g, 1a) and Kristina Udell (1g) are also among the point leaders for UMF. Ella Sinclair has been in net for every game, averaging 6.50 goals against. Sinclair has made 170 saves with a .867 save percentage.

Michigan-Flint took on Notre Dame their last time on the ice, suffering 7-1 and 5-2 losses. Kuikahi (1g) and Udell (1g) grabbed the lone goals in the 5-2 loss while Sinclair stopped 44 of 49 shots. Barella tallied the goals in the 7-1 loss while Sinclair made 32 saves on 39 shots on goal.


In 2015-16 the Saints took the sweep over UMF, 15-1 and 4-1. For UMF, Barella tallied a goal in the 15-1 loss before playing in net during the 4-1 loss, making 73 saves on 77 shots on net. Piotrowski (3g, 1a), Pentecost (2g, 3a), Maria Manko (3g) and Katelyn Graczyk (3g) grabbed the goals for Aquinas in the 15-1 win. Ensley was in net making 25 saves on 26 shots on net for the first win. In the second 4-1 win, Piotrowski (1g, 1a), Manko (1g) and Grazcyk (1g) put in the goals while Pentecost had a single helper. Ensley picked up the win with 14 saves on 15 shots faced.
