Sue McDowell – Commissioner
Sue was instrumental in starting the girls’ and women’s teams in Ann Arbor, MI, serving on their Board and as the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association Girls’/Women’s Director. She has her Level 5 coaching certification from USAH and continues to participate in an advisory capacity for USAH’s Michigan Education program and MAHA’s Girls’/Women’s Committee.
Sue started her hockey career as a goaltender for the Cape Cod Aces and played throughout her undergraduate career at Colby College, Waterville ME. She has a graduate degree from the University of MI – Ann Arbor where she and three co-founders started the UM Women’s Ice Hockey Club team. After a successful IT career at the UM, Sue is now a full-time independent author and spends her free time weaving, swimming, and enjoying the outdoors with her husband, Steve, and their pup, Tyche.
Brett Berger – Assistant Commissioner
Brett Berger is entering his second year as Division 2, Assistant Commissioner for the Central Collegiate Women’s Hockey Association.
During his time coaching, Berger won a National Championship, 4 League Playoff Championships, 5 Regular Season Championships and was named National Coach of the Year in 2017. Brett has coached at and worked with coaches and commissioners at every level within the ACHA, both Men’s and Women’s.
Internationally, Berger served as the Assistant Women’s Ice Hockey Coach for Team USA during the World University Games in 2017 (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and 2019 (Krasnoyarsk, Siberia), where he helped guide the team to winning the Bronze Medal in 2017.
Berger is extremely excited to join our staff and working to ensure that the CCWHA is a top tier league and continue the tradition of the league while always finding ways to improve and progress.
Mackenzie McMahon – Communications Manager
Mackenzie has been with the CCWHA since 2014-2015 as the Communications Manager for both leagues. In 2018-2019, Mackenzie served as the Co-Commissioner for the CCWHA D2 division and moved into the D1 Assistant Commissioner role this season.
Mackenzie oversees all communications related efforts for the CCWHA including writing and posting all press releases and news stories about all teams (both Division I and Division II), communicating with coaches, managing all of the social media platforms for the leagues and also designing sports graphics for game day and post-game use.
A graduate of Michigan State University, Mackenzie received her Bachelor’s degree in Communications in 2014. During her time at MSU, Mackenzie played for the MSU women’s ice hockey program for five years for both the Division I and Division II teams.
